Vintage pendant lights: illuminate with nostalgia!

Vintage interiors exude a timeless elegance found only in old stone buildings, solid wood or marble. A vintage pendant light will always be welcome, much like a baroque chandelier. In this article, we will explore the entire world of vintage pendant lights and what you need to know before buying one or more.

What is a vintage pendant light?

The term vintage primarily refers to lighting fixtures and decorative objects that existed during a period spanning more than 20 years, up to 100 years—beyond that, they are considered antiques. In popular imagination, people mostly think of the industrial design that made the 1920s famous, or the fringed lights of the 1950s in a grandmother's bedroom.

Vintage styles: you can immediately tell whether a lamp has a vintage design or not. If it dates back to the previous century, it is considered vintage. If it was made very recently, using modern materials to reproduce an old style, it is a contemporary retro-style chandelier. Among the most popular vintage pendant light styles are three classic designs:

Traditional vintage

  • The frosted glass pendant light, with a tulip-shaped shade: this wired fixture is a classic of 1930s holiday homes. Many are still around today! It sometimes features a porcelain base decorated with vintage patterns.

  • The colored glass globe pendant light: typical of Mediterranean style, this is an old type of pendant light that decorates living rooms in the south of France. Often in shades of red, orange, and turquoise green, this pretty round chandelier model adds a splash of color.

  • The thick, elongated glass-shard design pendant light: this is a designer fixture that does not dazzle. You can therefore fit it with a high-wattage bulb if general room lighting is the goal—it is also easy to maintain.

  • The solid wood pendant light: when it features a horizontal wooden bar with various bulbs hanging from cords, it creates a very natural and attractive nautical atmosphere! The whole thing is held together by a discreet electrical cable.

Industrial style

  • The rusted metal pendant light, typical of old factories. Generally in the form of adjustable ceiling spotlights, these vintage fixtures made of old metal feature visible filament bulbs as well as decorative grilles to reproduce the industrial style.

  • The aged metal bell: traditional in a living room, this is a very stylish type of pendant light when the metal it is made of (often brass or copper) is patinated. This adds a very authentic touch to a vintage setting! You can also choose a matte black pendant model to stay in the mood of the factories of that era.

Baroque style

  • The candelabra: often featuring metal arms and various bulbs placed here and there, it can also be designed in a round shape with built-in LED spotlights. This is a typical retro-vintage look, which, however, fits better in a spacious room such as a loft or a large living room.

  • The crystal fixture: the vintage crystal pendant light evokes the luxury and elegance of times past. These lamps provide optimal lighting thanks to the brilliant look of this finely crafted material! A medium-wattage LED or halogen bulb is recommended, given the lighting output.

How to properly install your vintage pendant light?

If your ceiling is high, choose a vintage pendant light model with a long, adjustable electrical cable so as not to leave an unsightly gap above the fixture. Also check that the ceiling mounting point is strong enough to support the weight of the structure, especially for solid metal or thick glass models—do not hesitate to call a professional if in doubt. If your room is particularly wide, consider balancing the space with several pendant lights rather than a single central model, for a more harmonious distribution of light.

What lighting is best for a vintage fixture?

Most of the vintage models you want to modernize in your new home originally used incandescent or even halogen bulbs. If the socket of your vintage pendant light allows it, install a modern LED bulb to save energy. If this is not possible, have it modified by an expert.

You can also buy retro fixtures that reproduce this era, with a dimmable bulb and a built-in dimmer. You can easily adjust the light intensity of your modern pendant light (for a room with a more contemporary décor) or your vintage pendant light via a remote control—a wonderful combination of modern technology and the creativity of designers from times past!
