The Chandelier with a Lampshade: Between Tradition and Modernity!

A chandelier is traditionally a type of light fixture that projects intense general lighting throughout the room. Due to its size and structure featuring candle holders or directional arms, the chandelier has traditionally featured either a bare light bulb when designed industrially (incandescent bulb) or candles that had to be lit and constantly maintained. As for lampshades, they first appeared in the 17th century, initially in public spaces on what is the ancestor of the floor lamp. They later appeared in period homes to create a softened atmosphere and provide gentle light. This also prevents direct glare.

Why a Chandelier with a Lampshade?

Lampshades come in a wide variety of materials. They can be customized to fit modern LED bulbs or retro halogen spotlights. Here are the different materials often used to make these light diffusers:

- Glass: If you already have a glass lampshade chandelier, frosted, tinted, or blown glass can serve as a built-in lampshade on its structure. The resulting style will be harmonious, while diffusing the light source with even greater brilliance. You can therefore choose smoked glass to reduce the intensity of the bulb and thus lower the number of lumens per square meter.

- Fabric: Fabric lampshades are very popular today! They create a soft, subdued atmosphere on a contemporary chandelier made of solid wood or black lacquered metal, for example. The most common materials are polyester, linen, and cotton. They give your pendant light a natural, silky look.

- Metal: Metal lampshades, such as black lacquered aluminum, are very fashionable. White metal is also popular in a Scandinavian style. It is a versatile material that comes in a wide range of options to soften the light emitted by your bulb.

- Wood: A weathered wood lampshade will enhance an old beige wooden chandelier or a metal one to create a very sleek nautical style. Since a chandelier is a large, bulky fixture, you should also pay attention to the ceiling's load-bearing capacity when installing the base.

Where to Hang a Chandelier with a Lampshade?

Hang it above a dining table in a living room or in a child's bedroom. These are two rooms where warm, soft light with orange tones is often desired. A nightlight or reading atmosphere in the evening creates a harmonious blend of the chandelier's retro aesthetic and the bulb's soothing light. The modern design provided by LED lighting further adds a touch of sophistication to your ceiling!

Which Bulb for the Lampshade?

Choose a socket with a standard E14 or E27 base. The light emitted must be certified for LED use to avoid the risk of burning fabric lampshades!

Before installation, always check the ceiling's load-bearing capacity and choose screws and wall plugs perfectly suited to the weight of the chandelier, especially if it is a wooden chandelier or metal one. Strictly follow current electrical standards to ensure your safety. In case of technical doubt or installation difficulties, it is strongly recommended to call a professional electrician. A professional will be able to install your chandelier safely and in compliance with regulations.
