The glass chandelier: modern, ambient lighting

Glass ceiling chandeliers are very chic indoor light fixtures that create a cosy atmosphere. Whether in any room of the house (living room, bathroom, entrance hall...), a wired glass lamp will gracefully illuminate your coffee table or your dining table, but also a headboard, for example. A glass globe suspended by an electrical cord is always welcome in an interior space!

What is a glass chandelier used for?

Glass chandeliers are used to project a functional flow of light in a living space. Depending on the type of glass you choose, whether clear or tinted, you can create a luminous cocoon that meets your expectations. In this article, you will discover different modern chandeliers, as well as vintage chandeliers that match what you are looking for in terms of brightness, style, and colour.

- Frosted glass chandelier: Whether tubular or in the form of a glass ball, the frosted (or opal) style creates a soft atmosphere that diffuses the light to illuminate your interior with great visual comfort. This type of chandelier fits very well in a Scandinavian interior! Scandinavian Art Deco is often adorned with light colours, such as white or beige. Do not hesitate to use a high-wattage bulb so that the light output is sufficient to counteract the frosted glass's "light-blocking" effect and its matte white colour.

- Clear glass: A crystalline glass chandelier is the ultimate traditional look! A classic, minimalist light fixture that brings a very chic lighting effect to a contemporary space. This type of pendant wall lamp comes in a wide variety of shapes (round, square, cylindrical), or even with a bare bulb. In this case, choose a smoked or tinted glass model, or one with an openwork shade made of plastic, wood, or matte black metal.

What lighting is best for my glass chandelier?

Lighting is an essential aspect of your glass lamp. Whether it is a large chandelier or a small model, the number of lumens will be important because glass is generally a material (even more so than fabric, wood, and certain metals) that transmits the light emitted. If you have the option to change the bulbs in your vintage chandelier, you can bring it up to date and also achieve a nice energy saving.

1: Clear glass:

  • Standard bulb: 25-30 watts

  • LED equivalent: 6-10 watts

2: Frosted glass:

  • Standard bulb: 40-60 watts

  • LED equivalent: 8-12 watts

3: Smoked glass:

  • Standard bulb: 25-40 watts

  • LED equivalent: 4-7 watts

It will also depend on the size of the room in which you will install your decorative lamp.

What shape of glass chandelier should I choose?

We recommend choosing according to your design preferences, but also according to the available space.

- Round glass chandelier: Classic and versatile, it can be suspended in a bathroom, entrance hall, or bedroom. The general lighting it projects will illuminate the entire room and fit equally well in a Scandinavian or industrial interior.

- Cylindrical glass chandelier: It can be made of two materials (metal-glass or wood-glass) to create a creative decorative atmosphere. This type of pendant light is often seen in a dining room or spacious loft, with an adjustable ceiling height.

- Trio or modular chandelier: glass spotlights placed here and there, next to another light fixture such as a fabric chandelier arranged in a row or in a modern shape, are creations inspired by contemporary designers! You can vary the shapes and spaces to project a directional flow of light.
