In a living room, the floor lamp is the light that creates the entire atmosphere: placed near the sofa, in a corner or above a reading nook, it illuminates gently without drilling or touching the ceiling. Arc, tripod, rattan, bamboo, Nordic or industrial: find the model that suits your living room, with a 2-year warranty, free returns within 30 days and shipping within 72 hours.
Why a floor lamp in the living room?
- It creates the atmosphere. Placed near a wall or a corner, it gives a soft, often indirect light that the ceiling light does not provide.
- It can be moved and requires no work. No drilling or ceiling wiring: it plugs into an outlet, making it practical for rentals.
- It serves multiple purposes. Reading on the sofa, lighting a dining area, soft light in front of the television.
- It decorates. Rattan, bamboo, feathers, wood or matte black metal: it dresses up the living room, whether on or off.
How many floor lamps for your living room?
A single ceiling light in the middle of the living room leaves dark areas and a somewhat flat light. For a comfortable living room, we combine three layers of light:
- General light: the ceiling light or pendant light, for moving around and receiving guests.
- Ambient light: a floor lamp with soft or indirect light, in a corner or behind the sofa.
- Reading or accent light: a floor lamp with a tiltable head near the armchair, or a model that highlights a piece of furniture or a painting.
| Living room area | Number of floor lamps (guide) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 15 m² | 1 | Narrow model in a corner or near the sofa |
| 15 to 25 m² | 1 to 2 | One for ambiance, one for reading |
| 25 to 40 m² | 2 to 3 | Ambiance, reading, dining area or office |
| More than 40 m² | 3 or more, per area | One floor lamp per living area |
Indicative guidelines. For a living room, count about 100 to 200 lumens per m² in total, all sources combined: a 20 m² living room therefore requires approximately 2,000 to 4,000 lumens, distributed between the ceiling light, floor lamps and lamps.
Where to place your floor lamp in the living room?
- Next to the sofa or reading armchair: slightly behind and to the side, about 30 to 60 cm away, with the light source slightly above shoulder level to avoid shadows on the page.
- In a corner: the light reflected by the walls visually enlarges the room. This is the solution for a small living room.
- Behind a sofa or corner sofa: a floor lamp with a tiltable head or an arc illuminates the seating area without obstructing the passage.
- Near the television: a soft and indirect light on the side or behind the screen limits contrast and eye strain. Avoid placing the lamp facing the screen, as it will create a reflection.
- Above a dining area or table: an arc floor lamp projects light above the table without a ceiling pendant. Check the ceiling height and space for the base.
- Avoid walkways and places where the cable crosses the room.
Which floor lamp for your living room?
- Arc floor lamp: its curved arm projects light above the sofa or a table, without installing a pendant light. It requires space for its base and a heavy, stable stand.
- Tripod floor lamp: three legs, a silhouette reminiscent of studio spotlights. In wood with a fabric lampshade, it's the Scandinavian effect for a cozy living room.
- Shelf floor lamp: light and storage in the same piece of furniture, for books and decorative objects. Always respect the maximum load indicated.
- Column floor lamp: a slim and vertical silhouette, with diffused light or sources integrated into the structure. It takes up little floor space.
- Rattan or bamboo floor lamp: natural and openwork materials that filter the light and create plays of shadows on the walls. Warm and bohemian atmosphere.
- Feather floor lamp: soft and textured lampshade that filters the light for a romantic and decorative atmosphere.
- Nordic floor lamp: light wood, soft lines and a light lampshade for a soothing and bright atmosphere.
- Industrial floor lamp: matte black or anthracite metal, graphic silhouette: the look of a loft.
- Reading floor lamp: tiltable head or articulated arm, to direct the light on a book or volume.
- Narrow floor lamp: slim base or compact stand, for a small living room or a corner.
Browse the selection above and use the collection filters to find the floor lamp that suits your living room.
What style and colors for your living room?
- Scandinavian living room: light wood base, linen, cotton or frosted glass lampshade, soft tones. It matches a light sofa and a wooden TV stand.
- Industrial living room: matte black, anthracite or metallic metal, graphic shapes. An aged or oxidized finish enhances the effect.
- Bohemian and natural living room: rattan, bamboo, wicker and natural fibers, with beige, ecru or terracotta tones.
- Modern living room: clean lines, metal or glass, a single dominant shade.
- Romantic or classic living room: feathers, soft fabrics, golden or cream touches.
A tip for colors: take a shade or material already present in the living room (TV stand wood, cushion fabric, picture frame). Stick to two or three main colors so that the living room remains harmonious, and let the floor lamp be the accent point or the discreet complement.
What height and size of floor lamp?
| Use | Guide |
|---|---|
| Usual height | 140 to 180 cm for most living room floor lamps |
| Reading on the sofa or an armchair | Light source slightly above shoulder level, lamp 30 to 60 cm from the seat |
| Lighting a table (arc) | Head about 70 cm above the table |
| Small living room (less than 15 m²) | Slim or compact base, height 140 to 160 cm |
| Large living room (more than 25 m²) | Taller or wider floor lamp, or several floor lamps |
Indicative guidelines, to be adapted to the ceiling height, the available space and the height of your sofa. Measure the location before ordering.
What material and lampshade?
- Fabric (linen, cotton): soft and warm light. A light lampshade illuminates more, a dark lampshade gives a more intimate light.
- Frosted glass or opal: diffused and light, without glare.
- Rattan and bamboo: filtered light, plays of shadows, natural style.
- Feathers: very soft light, decorative effect.
- Metal: solid, graphic. Matte black matches an industrial style, brass a warmer touch.
- Wood: light for a Scandinavian style, darker for a classic or rustic atmosphere.
Bulb, lumens and light color
- Lumens: count about 200 to 400 lumens for ambient light, 400 to 800 lumens for reading, and 800 to 1,500 lumens for a floor lamp that complements the living room lighting. An 8 to 10 W LED gives about 800 lumens.
- The socket: E27 (large socket, the most common) or E14 (small socket), indicated on the product sheet.
- The maximum power: it is indicated on the floor lamp: never exceed it.
- The color temperature: a warm white (2700 to 3000 K) is the most comfortable in a living room. Avoid cold white, which gives an office impression.
- The quality of light (CRI): aim for an index of at least 80, so that the colors of the living room and fabrics appear natural.
- Integrated LED or replaceable bulb: an integrated LED requires no maintenance, but it is the floor lamp that needs to be replaced at the end of its life. A socket lets you choose the power, shade and shape.
Dimming: it allows you to lower the light in front of the television and turn it up to read. You need a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer: a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer can flicker or hum. The dimmer can be on the cable, at the base or by remote control, or the integrated LED can be dimmable.
Safety and maintenance
- Stability: choose a heavy and wide base, especially with children or pets. For an arc, check the base counterweight.
- Cable: do not run it under a rug or across a walkway, and keep it away from heat sources.
- Bulb: respect the maximum power, and do not cover the bulb with a fabric or material that is not intended for this.
- Maintenance: unplug before cleaning. Dust rattan, bamboo, feathers and fabric with a duster or soft brush, avoid water and moisture, and wipe metal and glass with a soft slightly damp cloth.
