Why choose LED spotlights?

  • Minimal footprint. A recessed spotlight illuminates a large area through a very small hole in the ceiling. Unlike a ceiling light or pendant light, it is not limited by your ceiling height.
  • Excellent value for money. For functional general lighting, spotlights often cost less than ceiling lights with an equivalent light output. Depending on the model, with gold, black or white trim, they can also be decorative.
  • Easy installation. Lightweight, they do not put pressure on the ceiling and are unlikely to crack it, unlike a heavy chandelier that is poorly secured.
  • Reduced energy consumption. An LED spotlight uses up to 80% less energy than a halogen spotlight. It turns on instantly, produces very little heat and lasts much longer.

Which type of spotlight is right for your project?

  • Fixed recessed spotlights: for uniform general lighting in living areas, hallways or entrances. View recessed spotlights
  • Adjustable spotlights: the head pivots to direct the light towards a worktop, painting or reading nook without glare. View ceiling spotlights
  • Track spotlights: no drilling or recessing required. Move them as you wish to illuminate a piece of furniture, dining area or artwork.
  • Staircase spotlights: they mark the steps and provide soft light in the room.
  • Wall spotlights: an alternative to wall lights, providing soft light upwards and downwards. Install them in the upper third of the wall to avoid glare.
  • Smart spotlights: dimmable by remote control and, for some models, with a motion sensor.
  • Outdoor spotlights: for illuminating a driveway, patio or flower bed. They must be waterproof (IP65 recommended). View outdoor spotlights

Choosing your LED spotlights: the 6 criteria

  1. Luminous flux, in lumens (lm). This is what matters, not watts. The more lumens, the stronger the light.
  2. Colour temperature, in kelvins (K). Warm white (2700 to 3000 K) for relaxing, neutral white (4000 K) for working or cooking, cool white (6500 K) for a garage or workshop.
  3. CRI (Colour Rendering Index). Aim for at least 80, and 90 for a kitchen or worktop where colours need to remain true to life.
  4. Beam angle. Wide (around 90 to 120°) to illuminate an entire room, narrow (25 to 40°) to highlight an object.
  5. Protection rating (IP). IP20 for dry rooms, at least IP44 for areas exposed to splashes, IP65 for outdoors or in close proximity to water.
  6. Integrated LED or replaceable bulb. An integrated LED requires no maintenance, but the entire spotlight must be replaced at the end of its life. A replaceable bulb (GU10, GU5.3) allows you to change the power or colour temperature.

Our recommendations by room

Room Lumens per m² Recommended temperature Minimum IP Tip
Hallway, entrance 100 to 150 2700 to 3000 K IP20 Avoid shadows between two spotlights
Living room, lounge 150 to 300 2700 to 3000 K IP20 Choose a dimmable model
Bedroom 100 to 200 2700 K IP20 Soft light, spotlights to complement a bedside lamp
Kitchen 300 to 500 4000 K IP20 (IP44 near the sink) CRI 90 for true colours
Bathroom 200 to 400 3000 to 4000 K Minimum IP44, IP65 near water Check the required rating for the area
Office 300 to 500 4000 K IP20 Uniform lighting, without reflections on the screen
Outdoor Depending on use 2700 to 3000 K IP65 Aluminium housing to prevent oxidation

These values are indicative guidelines, not standards.

How many spotlights do you need?

The calculation is simple: area × lumens per m² ÷ lumens per spotlight.

Example: a 20 m² living room requiring 200 lm/m² needs 4,000 lumens. With 400 lm spotlights, you will need 10.

A few tips: distribute them evenly to avoid shadows, add more light under a ceiling higher than 2.8 m, and combine them with a pendant light, lamp or floor lamp to create different atmospheres in the evening.

Dimmable: adapt the light to every moment

A dimmable spotlight allows you to lower the intensity in the evening or increase the light for cooking, and reduces your energy consumption. Check that the spotlight and dimmer are compatible to avoid flickering.

Which ceiling is suitable for installing recessed spotlights?

Recessed spotlights are installed in a plasterboard false ceiling (such as BA13), suspended ceiling or technical structure. Check the product sheet for the required installation depth and the available space above your ceiling.

Installing a ceiling spotlight: the steps

  1. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
  2. Mark the location and check the drilling diameter (the size of the hole to be made) on the product sheet. Do not confuse it with the visible diameter of the spotlight.
  3. Drill with a hole saw of the correct diameter.
  4. Connect the wires (phase, neutral, earth if necessary) with a terminal block or quick connector.
  5. Insert the spotlight: the spring clips fold back and then hold it flush against the ceiling.
  6. Restore the power and test.

Note: if your ceiling is insulated, choose a model designed to be covered with insulation (this is specified on the sheet). In new builds or energy retrofits, opt for spotlights designed for insulated and airtight ceilings. In the bathroom, respect the IP rating for the area. If in doubt, call an electrician.

Changing a spotlight bulb

First check whether your spotlight has a replaceable bulb or an integrated LED. In the latter case, the entire spotlight must be replaced at the end of its life. If the bulb is replaceable: turn off the power, let it cool, remove the trim or clips, remove the bulb (by turning it for a GU10, pulling it for a GU5.3), then install a bulb of the same type and replace the trim.

Replacing your old halogen spotlights

Halogen bulbs are largely being phased out of the European market. Switching to LED saves you up to 80% in energy, offers a longer lifespan and produces far less heat. Check the socket (GU10 or GU5.3) and equivalent power before replacing.

Frequently asked questions

Fixed or adjustable spotlight: which should I choose?

Fixed to illuminate a room evenly, adjustable to highlight a specific area (painting, worktop, reading nook).

Which colour temperature should I choose?

2700 to 3000 K for the living room and bedroom, 4000 K for the kitchen, bathroom and office, 6500 K for a garage or workshop.

Can I replace my halogen spotlights with LEDs?

Yes, in most cases. Check the socket (GU10, GU5.3) and the drilling diameter if it is a recessed spotlight.

What IP rating is required for a bathroom?

At least IP44 in areas exposed to splashes, IP65 in close proximity to the shower or bath. The required rating depends on the area, so if in doubt, ask an electrician for advice.

Replaceable bulb or integrated LED?

Integrated LED: no maintenance, but the spotlight must be replaced entirely. Replaceable bulb: you can change the power or colour temperature at any time.

What warranty and timeframes?

All our lighting fixtures have a 2-year warranty, we dispatch within 72 hours, and you can return your order within 30 days, without conditions, at our expense.
