What does a rattan chandelier evoke?
Rattan interior décor evokes the bohemian charm of the 1970s, lightness, freedom, and a sense of adventure. In addition to creating a warm atmosphere in a kitchen or hallway, a rattan ceiling light creates a play of shadows on the ceiling, loved by young and old alike! For decades, this designer light fixture has been available in a wide variety of styles: table lamps, wall lights, bedside lamps... and, of course, pendant lights and ceiling lights!
How to choose your rattan chandelier
To start, consider the dominant color of the room where you plan to hang your pendant light. Rattan is naturally beige or brown, so if your living room is mainly decorated in these colors, you will have no trouble placing a rattan chandelier right in the center. It will become the centerpiece of your interior lighting! If your décor is Nordic in style, with white metal, sheepskin, and beige rugs, place a pair of small rattan chandeliers here and there to create contrast while providing warm general lighting.
Choose a rattan chandelier to suit the desired atmosphere
We will discuss four commonly recognized styles: bohemian, exotic, natural, and modern...
An exotic atmosphere is often found in oriental or Japanese-style bathrooms. In this case, a modular rattan ceiling light that can create various geometric shapes would be a good option. Also consider the size of the room! A natural rattan lampshade often lets through a soft glow filtered by the wood fibers, but you should still pay attention to the number of lumens per square meter in the room so as not to create an imbalance.
For a bohemian atmosphere, lightness is the top priority. The chandelier should be minimalist and reflect a glamorous style. A simple rattan globe pendant light with a glass bulb containing a decorative filament is a basic and highly popular option for this type of atmosphere.
A modern atmosphere is characterized by futuristic curves that showcase the designer's ingenuity. Cylindrical, tubular, or conical shapes are often cutting-edge, with a preference for combining different materials. For example, a mix of metal and natural wood, or glass and rattan. It is therefore not uncommon to see a copper or chrome-plated metal chandelier base, with an electrical cable that reveals a woven rattan lampshade.
The benefits of a rattan chandelier
- Lightness: It puts almost no strain on your ceiling. Unless the base is made of heavy metal such as stainless steel or brass, or even solid wood, if your light fixtures are made entirely of rattan, they are as light as bamboo. You can install it without any risk of it falling, or almost. This is also a definite advantage when decorating a child's bedroom with a pendant light but fearing that objects thrown around could knock down the chandelier and cause damage.
- Ambient lighting: A definite advantage of a rattan light fixture is the general lighting it provides. This can take the form of indirect lighting that first reflects the light source off the ceiling (if the lampshade is inverted), or directly in all directions if the woven lampshade surrounds the LED bulb.
- Durability: Unlike untreated metal such as nickel, or metals such as gold, brass, silver, copper, or aluminum, which develop a patina or rust, rattan has the advantage of retaining its shine over time!
Where to install my rattan chandelier?
Above a dining table: Your family will be well lit by a soft, cosy light source overhead.
Above a reading area: If you have an armchair, bookcase, and table, how wonderful it is to read a book by comfortable light while enjoying a beautiful designer lamp! If you are looking up at it, make sure to choose a smoked glass bulb or one with a relatively low wattage so as not to be dazzled.
Tips for caring for your rattan chandelier
Avoid cleaning your wooden chandelier with chemicals or water. This also applies to a feather chandelier. Water will seep into the wood fibers, making them brittle as they dry. In addition to this risk, chemicals can also cause the rattan to lose its shine and taupe color. Also make sure not to install the chandelier near a direct light source, such as under a veranda exposed to the south or southwest sun! Prolonged exposure to the sun can weaken your wooden lampshades.
