The LED floor lamp: the fusion of a timeless light fixture and modern technology

Floor lamps have undergone numerous evolutions. From the earliest models on the streets of 17th-century Paris, made of candle holders, to today's models with spotlights and LED bulbs. In this article, we will help you choose the right type of light fixture with LED lighting. As a floor lamp is an auxiliary lamp, you must ensure that it provides optimal and comfortable lighting.

What are the advantages of LED lighting on a floor lamp?

First of all, LED bulbs provide energy-efficient lighting. Most bedside lamp, wall light, and pendant models (not just floor lamps) already include a bulb built directly into the structure, or are screwed into the socket for certain models. Please note that most of the bulbs we have in stock have an E14 base, or E27 for larger ones.

A floor lamp equipped with an LED bulb also offers the possibility, if you choose, of being technologically "smart". This means that you can get a dimmable bulb model, with a color temperature controller built directly in. Adjustable via a remote control, the dimmable light fixture gives you the option to customize the light intensity. As a night light if you want to read a book, or as a white light if you are doing DIY or working.

What lighting for my LED light fixture?

There are various types of lighting depending on where you place your floor lamp.

Direct lighting: Allowing a light flow to be distributed throughout each room, it is functional lighting used for concentration and to highlight a place as a whole. Its main purpose is the distribution of the light flow with a certain balance. To do this, you can choose a glass globe pendant light, or a half-moon oriented towards the room. Then you have to choose the desired brightness level. To do this, you can calculate the number of lumens per square meter at a ratio of 15 L per square meter. To avoid glare, you can choose a frosted glass shade, or a perforated metal one, for example.

Indirect lighting: Projecting the light first onto the wall and reflecting it throughout the room, indirect lighting creates an often subdued atmosphere. On a floor lamp at eye level with a single or tripod stand, it will often be a shade with one side covered in a specific color or coating, while the other side facing the wall will project a sufficiently high number of watts. For a pendant light or chandelier, on the other hand, it is an inverted shade. turned towards the ceiling wall You understand the principle. We can also mention semi-direct lighting, as well as semi-indirect.

Spotlight (or directional) lighting: Floor lamps, like all free-standing lamps with a base, are often fitted with a conical or cylindrical shade to project spotlight-type lighting towards a specific place. This can be a headboard, a sofa, an armchair, or a kitchen worktop, for example. The chosen floor lamp will often be equipped with a foldable and adjustable arm, or its structure will be rigid, and oriented in such a way that it cannot be moved (curved in shape, for example).

What materials for an LED floor lamp?

There are materials that create a greater extension of LED light than others, while other materials change the nature of the lighting. Changing it from warm white to neutral white.

- Wood: Depending on the color of the wood grain (light brown, dark brown, or cream white), the color temperature will not be the same for a wooden floor lamp with a bamboo shade as for another with an oak shade, for example. The Scandinavian style, on the other hand, is often very warm.

- Metal: Here too, a design floor lamp in metal like matte black aluminum will not diffuse the same brightness as a model in anthracite gray brass, which will create a brighter light flow, and a more pronounced light intensity.

- Plastic: an excellent economical choice, plastic also offers multiple possibilities in terms of room lighting. Depending on whether you opt for matte white on the shade, or polycarbonate imitating crystal, the LED light source will be more or less important.

It is especially important to define in advance the type of use you will make of your new lamp. To illuminate a corner? Or as a reading night light? Define the use to choose the right LED bulb as well as the appropriate shade.
