The dining room ceiling light: Why is it so important?
Getting together as a family around a good meal in the evening is an integral part of any culture. And what better way to showcase the dishes on the dining table than with a warm, softly lit ambiance from above? It also invites wonderful conversations, thanks to the comforting and cosy atmosphere created by a dining room ceiling light.
Also, the space savings are considerable! A chandelier suspended by an electrical cord could obstruct the movement of dishes or people. This is where the ceiling light and its recessed base have an advantage. Even if your ceiling height is rather limited (around 2.20m), you can still illuminate every room with a recessed model that provides light while optimizing space, thus enhancing your interior décor with its design.
Throughout this article, we will provide you with an overview of how to arrange your lighting with a light fixture suited to your dining room!
Which ceiling light for the dining room
Depending on the size of your space, but also the type of interior décor you have (Scandinavian, Nordic, modern, industrial...), certain types of ceiling lights will be more suitable and fit better into your dining room décor.
The shape of the ceiling light above a dining table
Everything depends on the shape of the table.
For a square dining table
-
A group of light fixtures with square recessed spotlights.
They are generally fixed. In addition, they individually emit a warm white light with few lumens. The entire group is sufficient to illuminate the whole table. It is a modern style that can be complemented with wall lights on the adjacent walls, or one or two small pendant lights in the living room, above the coffee table, for example. Each LED spotlight can have a metal base in a neutral color, chrome, or wood.
-
A square ceiling light
We do not recommend it as our first or second choice. Why? To break the symmetry and add a little originality, as well as distinct decorative touches. But if this is not a criterion that matters to you, a square LED light fixture is entirely feasible. In that case, choose it in a color that contrasts with the color of the table. For example, if you have a black metal table, opt for a beige or yellow ceiling light, or both.
For a round table
-
A round dining room ceiling light
This is logically the most suitable. Depending on the material of your table, you can adapt the type of ceiling light accordingly. Models with crossed rings, or even arcs, are also good choices for a round table.
Regarding the material, it is appropriate to opt for aged wood for a recessed lamp above a wooden table, or a rattan model to create a sleek, exotic style! In addition, the round shape of the ceiling light creates a concentric style that distributes the light proportionally.
If you do not want a wooden shade or pendant light, tinted glass is a good option. A metal such as brass can also adapt to any living space.
-
A group of recessed spotlights arranged in a circle
As with the square table, it is perfectly logical. Ideal for creating a proportional and balanced light intensity from the ceiling to the bottom.
For a rectangular table
-
A linear ceiling light or light bar
The advantage of this type of pendant light is that it follows the length of the table continuously, distributing light to every corner. White metal or black metal are the most popular choices in this case, with a compact fluorescent bulb integrated into each bar.
For an extendable dining table:
-
A modular ceiling light
The advantage of an adjustable light fixture is that you can create general or focused lighting by distributing the number of lumens via the adjustable spotlights. Depending on the number of people you receive, you can distribute each spotlight, or orient each one differently depending on the size you give your table.
Among the popular modular light fixture designs, there are:
-
Straight rails adjustable in length
-
Flexible rails that can be curved
-
Swivel articulated arms
-
Spotlights with swivel heads
How many watts for a dining room ceiling light
For a ceiling light in a living space such as a dining room, the lighting power in watts will mainly depend on the size of the room and the desired atmosphere. Here are some recommendations:
-
For a soft and warm atmosphere: 100 to 200 watts (or the equivalent in lumens, which is around 1000 to 2000 lumens), and 2500 Kelvin.
-
For more functional lighting in white light: 200 to 300 watts (or 2000 to 3000 lumens) and 3500 Kelvin.
Prefer LED or compact fluorescent energy-saving bulbs; they create real energy savings while producing a brightness equivalent to a halogen bulb. So you might need around 15 to 30 watts of LED to get the same light intensity as classic 100 to 300-watt lighting.
What distance for a dining room ceiling light
There are two points to consider.
Depending on the size of the room:
-
Small room: 40-60 cm in diameter
-
Large room: 60-100 cm in diameter
Depending on the ceiling height:
-
Ideally 75-90 cm above the table
-
Minimum 60 cm so as not to obstruct the view
