Living room pendant light

In a living room, the pendant light sets the tone: it illuminates the room from the center, above the coffee table or dining area, and stands out above all else. Globe, oval, cylindrical, rattan, bamboo, industrial or Scandinavian: find the pendant light that suits your living room or loft, at the right height and size, with a 2-year warranty, free returns within 30 days and shipping within 72 hours.

Why a pendant light in the living room?

  • It illuminates the room from the center. Fixed to the ceiling, it provides general lighting, or targeted light over an area (coffee table, dining area).
  • It sets the tone of the decor. Due to its size, shape, and material, it is often the first thing people notice upon entering.
  • It frees up floor space and furniture. Unlike a floor lamp or table lamp, it takes up no space on the floor.
  • It adjusts to your ceiling. With an adjustable cable or chain, you can choose the height according to your room.
  • It creates the atmosphere. With a dimmable bulb, you can switch from bright light to soft light depending on the time of day.

At what height should a pendant light be hung in the living room?

There is no absolute rule, but there are reliable guidelines. The first: the bottom of the pendant light must remain at least 2.10 m above the floor anywhere people walk underneath, to avoid bumping into it.

Location Recommended height from the bottom of the pendant light
Walkway (center of the living room, between sofa and television) At least 2.10 m above the floor
Above a dining table 75 to 85 cm above the table (for a ceiling height of 2.40 to 2.50 m)
Above a coffee table, with no walkway underneath Approximately 1.70 to 1.90 m above the floor, depending on the size of the pendant light and the height of the people
Above a table, with a ceiling height of more than 2.50 m Raise the pendant light by approximately 10 cm for every additional 30 cm of ceiling height

How to choose the length of the cable or chain? Take the ceiling height, subtract 2.10 m, then the height of the light fixture itself. Example: a 2.70 m ceiling, a 30 cm high pendant light: 2.70 − 2.10 − 0.30 = approximately 0.30 m of visible cable. With a 2.50 m ceiling, there is almost nothing left: in this case, choose a ceiling light or a compact pendant light.

These are indicative guidelines, to be adapted to your room. An adjustable-height pendant light is the easiest: you adjust it once installed.

What size pendant light for your living room?

Living room area Recommended diameter Quantity
Less than 15 m² 30 to 40 cm 1
15 to 25 m² 40 to 60 cm 1 large, or 2 to 3 smaller ones
More than 25 m² (living room, loft) 50 to 80 cm, or several 1 per area (living room, dining area)

Above a dining table, aim for half to two-thirds of the table's width. For a long table, several identical pendant lights, spaced approximately 60 to 80 cm apart, distribute the light better than a single one.

Indicative guidelines. A light fixture that is too small gets lost in the room, a light fixture that is too large overwhelms it.

Where to place your pendant light in the living room?

  • In the center of the living room: a large pendant light, round or oval, illuminates the entire room. If the sofa and coffee table are offset, center it over the coffee table rather than the room.
  • Above the coffee table: for ambient lighting over the relaxation area. Make sure no one walks underneath and that the height is sufficient.
  • Above the sofa: not recommended, as the pendant light would be above people's heads and could be in the way or cause glare when sitting or lying down. Offset it towards the coffee table or the room instead.
  • Above the dining table: in an open-plan living space, a pendant light (or a trio) visually defines the dining area. A model in wood, metal, or rattan sets the tone.
  • Near a reading nook or armchair: a small model with a directional spotlight or focused light, complementing wall lights or a floor lamp.
  • Several pendant lights: three pendant lights of different sizes, or aligned, create a strong decorative effect above a table or island.

What shape of pendant light to choose?

Geometric shapes

  • Round or globe pendant light: soft and timeless, it fits into almost any living room. Fabric, rattan, or glass shade.
  • Oval or elongated pendant light: more elegant and more dynamic, ideal in a modern living room or above a rectangular table.
  • Cylindrical pendant light: with a sleek and minimalist design, suitable for Scandinavian interiors, with diffused and even light.
  • Bell-shaped pendant light: bistro or chic country silhouette, highly appreciated above a table or island.
  • Cluster pendant light: several elements grouped together for a strong decorative effect.

Functional shapes

  • Pendant light with adjustable spotlights: you direct the light precisely, for a reading nook or an area to highlight.
  • Light panel pendant light (LED): a large diffusing surface that provides even light. It is especially suitable for large rooms and a contemporary style.

What style and materials?

  • Industrial or loft: matte black metal or aged finish, exposed bulb.
  • Scandinavian: light wood, white or light shade, soft light.
  • Natural and bohemian: rattan and bamboo, whose openwork filters the light and creates plays of shadows.
  • Modern: chrome metal, glass, clean lines.
  • Tinted or smoked glass: more subdued and warm light, with a touch of color.
  • Fabric: soft and diffused light, cozy effect.
  • Wood, ceramic: warm materials, suitable for a cozy or rustic living room.

A tip: take a material or color already present in the living room (wood of the table, metal of the handles). Limit yourself to two or three finishes to keep the room harmonious.

Bulb, lumens and dimming

  • The socket: E27 (large socket) or E14 (small socket), indicated on the product sheet.
  • The maximum power: indicated on the pendant light: never exceed it, especially with several bulbs.
  • The lumens: for a living room, count approximately 100 to 200 lumens per m² in total, all sources combined. A 20 m² living room requires approximately 2,000 to 4,000 lumens, distributed between the pendant light and the other luminaires.
  • The color temperature: warm white (2700 to 3000 K) for relaxation. Avoid cold white, which gives an office feel.
  • The quality of light (CRI): aim for a rating of at least 80 so that colors appear natural.
  • Integrated LED or replaceable bulb: an integrated LED requires no maintenance, but it is the pendant light that needs to be replaced at the end of its life. A socket lets you choose the power, shade, and shape.

Dimmer: to vary the intensity, you need a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer. The dimmer changes the intensity, not the color: to switch from warm white to cold white, you need a model with adjustable temperature, often with a remote control.

Openwork or opaque shade? An openwork shade (rattan, bamboo, cut metal) lets the light filter through and creates plays of shadows. An opaque shade directs the light downwards, to illuminate a table. In both cases, avoid having the bulb directly visible from the seating areas.

Installing a pendant light safely

  1. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker and check that there is no more voltage.
  2. Check the mounting: the mounting point (hook or DCL, the connection device for luminaires) must be able to support the weight of the pendant light, indicated on the product sheet.
  3. Adjust the length of the cable or chain.
  4. Connect the wires (phase, neutral, and ground if the luminaire is class I) with a terminal block or connector.
  5. Fix the mounting plate, place the bulbs, then restore the power.

A large pendant light is often handled by two people. At the slightest doubt about the mounting or wiring, call an electrician.

Maintenance

Turn off, cut the power, and wait for the bulb to cool. Dust the fabric, rattan, and bamboo with a feather duster or soft brush, without water. Glass and metal are cleaned with a slightly damp cloth, dried thoroughly. Do not use abrasive products.

Frequently asked questions

At what height should a pendant light be hung in the living room?

At least 2.10 m above the floor in a walkway. Above a dining table, the bottom of the pendant light is placed 75 to 85 cm above the table.

How to calculate the length of the cable?

Take the ceiling height, subtract 2.10 m and the height of the luminaire. The remainder is the useful cable length. With a 2.50 m ceiling, prefer a ceiling light or a compact model.

What size pendant light for a living room?

Count 30 to 40 cm in diameter under 15 m², 40 to 60 cm from 15 to 25 m², and 50 to 80 cm or several pendant lights beyond.

Can you put a pendant light above the sofa?

It is not recommended: it would be above people's heads. Place it instead above the coffee table or in the center of the room.

What bulb for a living room pendant light?

Look at the socket (E27 or E14) and the maximum power indicated on the pendant light. Choose a warm white (2700 to 3000 K), and a dimmable bulb if you want to vary the atmosphere.

What warranty and what deadlines?

Our luminaires are guaranteed for 2 years, we ship within 72 hours, and you can return your order to us within 30 days, without conditions, at our expense.
