Chandelier

A chandelier sets the tone of a room: it illuminates, decorates, and catches the eye as soon as you enter. Above a table, in a living room, entryway, or bedroom, it replaces a simple ceiling light with a real statement piece. Baroque, industrial, Scandinavian, vintage, or modern: find the chandelier that suits your interior, with a 2-year warranty and free returns within 30 days.

Why choose a chandelier?

  • It becomes the focal point of the room. A well-chosen chandelier sets the tone of the decor, whether your style is classic, Scandinavian, or industrial.
  • It really illuminates. With multiple light sources, it provides general lighting in the living room, dining room, or entryway without the need for multiple lamps.
  • It comes in all budgets and materials. Metal, wood, glass, crystal, bamboo, fabric: there is a chandelier for every interior, not just for large homes.
  • It adapts to the atmosphere. With a dimmer, you can switch from bright light for dinner to soft light for relaxing.

Chandelier, pendant light, or ceiling light: what's the difference?

Generally, a chandelier is a decorative light fixture with multiple arms or bulbs, often with crystals, candles, or a play of shapes. A pendant light hangs from the ceiling by a cable or rod, often with a single lampshade. A ceiling light is fixed directly to the ceiling; it is flatter and more discreet. If you have a low ceiling, a ceiling light or semi-recessed chandelier will often be more suitable.

Which chandelier for which room?

  • Living room: for general lighting in the center of the living area. A baroque chandelier with crystals, or a Nordic wooden model with a frosted glass shade, depending on your style.
  • Dining room: above the table, a chandelier or a pair of pendant lights creates a luminous cocoon. Match the material to the table (wood, metal, wrought iron).
  • Kitchen: above an island or a table, a chandelier adds style. To illuminate the countertop, complement it with spotlights or wall lights.
  • Entryway: the first impression of the home. An Art Deco, baroque, or blown-glass chandelier sets the tone right at the threshold.
  • Bedroom: soft light with a wooden, bamboo, or fabric model, ideally dimmable.

Which style of chandelier should you choose?

  • Baroque chandelier: metal frame, glass or crystal crystals, sometimes faux candles with LEDs. A classic and elegant style, in a large cascading model or a more understated version.
  • Industrial chandelier: matte black metal, anthracite gray, or rust, visible filament bulb. It suits both a loft and an old stone house equally well.
  • Scandinavian chandelier: light wood, white metal, and frosted glass for soft, soothing light.
  • Vintage chandelier: glass or porcelain globes, patinated finishes, 1950s and 60s inspiration.
  • Modern chandelier: twisted shapes, LED rings, metal or wooden spotlight branches, sometimes with a remote control.

In terms of materials, you will also find chandeliers in wood, bamboo, blown glass, crystal, fabric, or modern materials such as recycled cardboard. Use the collection filters to refine by material, finish, or style.

Matching your chandelier to your decor

To choose a chandelier that truly integrates into your interior, walk around the room and identify the dominant style: the furniture, materials, and colors.

  • Modern or industrial furniture: opt for a chandelier with geometric lines, in black metal or with LED rings, that echoes the shapes of the room.
  • Imposing furniture, thick rugs, classic atmosphere: a baroque chandelier with crystals or wrought iron perfectly highlights this type of decor.
  • Scandinavian or natural interior: choose light wood, bamboo, frosted glass, or fabric for soft, soothing light.
  • Repeat a material or shade already present: the wood of the table, the metal of the handles or frames. The chandelier then blends into the whole.
  • Or play with contrast: a baroque chandelier in a very minimalist interior becomes the centerpiece of the room. In this case, keep the rest of the decor understated.
  • Limit the finishes: two or three different finishes in the same room are enough to maintain a harmonious whole.

Finishes: which one to choose?

  • Matte black: contemporary and graphic, it stands out well on light walls. Ideal for an industrial or modern style.
  • Gold and brass: warm and elegant, it adds an Art Deco or refined touch. Aged brass also brings a classic patina.
  • Chrome and polished nickel: shiny, they reflect light for a modern and luminous look.
  • Copper and bronze: warm tones that evoke a retro or loft atmosphere.
  • White and lacquered: light and discreet, they suit small rooms or Scandinavian interiors.
  • Natural wood: warmth and authenticity. Light for a Nordic style, darker for a warmer atmosphere.
  • Crystal and glass: they play with light and create reflections, especially with crystals.

To harmonize, look at the other finishes in the room (handles, faucets, frames): they do not need to be identical, but they must match. In the kitchen, a smooth finish (lacquer, chrome, glass) is easier to wipe clean. Use the "finish" filter in the collection to refine your search.

What size chandelier, and at what height should it be hung?

Room Chandelier diameter (guideline) Hanging height Temperature Lumens per m²
Living room Room length + width in meters, multiplied by 8 (in cm) Bottom of the chandelier at least 2.10 m from the floor in a passageway 2700 to 3000 K 150 to 300
Dining room 1/2 to 2/3 of the table width Bottom of the chandelier 75 to 85 cm above the table (ceiling 2.40 to 2.50 m) 2700 to 3000 K 150 to 300
Kitchen Depending on the island or table 75 to 85 cm above an island or table 3000 to 4000 K 300 to 500
Entryway Small or medium model At least 2.10 to 2.20 m below the light fixture 2700 to 3000 K 100 to 150
Bedroom Light model, moderate size At least 2.10 m from the floor 2700 K, dimmable 100 to 200

Example: a living room measuring 4 m by 5 m gives 9 × 8 = approximately 72 cm in diameter. If your ceiling exceeds 2.50 m, raise the chandelier by approximately 10 cm for every additional 30 cm of ceiling height. These are indicative guidelines.

Which bulb, how much light?

  • The socket. E27 (large socket, the most common) or E14 (small socket). The reference is on the product sheet.
  • The maximum power. It is indicated on the chandelier and on the product sheet: never exceed it, especially with multiple bulbs.
  • The lumen output. Multiply the room area by the lumens per m² in the table, then distribute among the bulbs. Example: a 20 m² living room at 200 lm/m² requires 4,000 lumens, or 5 bulbs of 800 lumens.
  • The color temperature. Warm white (2700 to 3000 K) for the living room and bedroom, neutral white (4000 K) for the kitchen.
  • Integrated LED or replaceable bulbs. The integrated LED requires no maintenance, but the entire chandelier must be replaced at the end of its life. Models with sockets let you choose the shape, shade, and power.
  • Wet room: choose a suitable IP rating.

Dimmer and remote control

A dimmable chandelier allows you to lower the intensity for a soft atmosphere, or raise it for dinner or cooking. You need a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer. An ordinary dimmer varies the intensity, not the shade: to also change the color of the light, choose a chandelier with adjustable temperature or a remote control.

Installing a chandelier safely

  1. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
  2. Check the ceiling mounting: the hook or mounting point must be able to support the weight of the chandelier (indicated on the product sheet). A heavy chandelier requires reinforced mounting.
  3. Adjust the height if the chandelier is on a chain or adjustable cable.
  4. Connect the wires (phase, neutral, ground if necessary) with a terminal block or connector.
  5. Fix the mounting plate, assemble the chandelier, place the bulbs, then restore the power.

A chandelier is often heavy and should be handled by two people. If in doubt about the mounting or wiring, call an electrician.

Maintenance

Unplug before cleaning. Dust the crystal, crystals, and glass with a soft or microfiber cloth, and handle blown glass with care. For wood and bamboo, use a dry cloth and avoid moisture.

Frequently asked questions

At what height should a chandelier be hung above a table?

The bottom of the chandelier is generally placed 75 to 85 cm above the table, for a ceiling of 2.40 to 2.50 m. Raise it by approximately 10 cm for every additional 30 cm of ceiling height.

What size chandelier for my table or room?

Above a table, aim for 1/2 to 2/3 of its width. In a room, add the length and width in meters and multiply by 8 to get an approximate diameter in centimeters.

Can you put a chandelier in a kitchen?

Yes, above an island or a table. To illuminate the countertop, add spotlights or wall lights as a complement.

Which bulb should you choose for a chandelier?

Look at the socket (E27 or E14) and the maximum power indicated on the chandelier. In the living room or bedroom, favor warm white (2700 to 3000 K) and a dimmable bulb if you want to vary the atmosphere.

What's the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?

The chandelier is a decorative light fixture with multiple arms or bulbs, the pendant light hangs from the ceiling generally with a single lampshade. Both hang from the ceiling, but the chandelier is more ornamental.
